  Play History:

Jawa:  Maker defend the droid that has wandered away from its masters on the desert world of Tatooine. Of the many dangers that travel the dunes and crags of the arid world, few can send a droid's behavioral matrix circuitry into a tizzy like the Jawas.

They are hardly monstrous, appearing as meter-tall humanoids completely hidden behind rough, hand-woven robes. Their faces are concealed within the dark folds of a cowl, from which peer their sickly glowing yellow eyes.

The Jawas are a scavenger species. They comb the deserts of Tatooine in search of discarded scrap and wayward mechanicals. Using their cobbled-together weaponry, they can incapacitate droids and drag them to their treaded fortress-homes, immense sand-scarred vehicles known as Sandcrawlers.

Jawas form an important link in the circle of trade that connects the distant Tatooine communities. They sell their hastily refurbished junk to moisture farmers who are hard-pressed to find a better selection elsewhere. For their shoddy work and vagabond ways, they have a well-earned reputation as hucksters out to hoodwink the outlander colonists on Tatooine.

The Jawas of Tatooine are a scavenger species that scours the deserts in hopes of finding machinery to salvage. As such, they carry weapons specially designed to incapacitate droids. The small rifle that connects to a belt-worn powerpack emits a smoky blast of energy that envelops a droid in an electric blue haze. By the time the discharge has worked its way through a droid's body, the automaton is rendered inactive, and the greedy scrap-dealers move in to lift it away.

Few have ever seen the ugliness that lies beneath a Jawa mask. Jawa faces are obscured by a cloud of insects that gather in the recesses of their hoods, attracted by their foul odors. Their particular stench is a combination of poor hygiene and a mysterious solution into which Jawas dip their clothes to retain moisture. To Jawas, the odor is packed with information about each other, such as clan lineage, health, emotional state, even the last meal eaten.

Jawas have evolved several important survival traits, such as exceptional night vision, a strong immune system, and an efficient digestive system that draws all the needed nutrients from the Jawa staple diet of hubba gourd.

Jawas have long been scavengers, as the Dune Sea provides a bounty of refuse. It is littered with derelict spacecraft wreckage from millennia of star travel. The Jawas have built homes and tools from these ancient scraps, and travel the dunes in sandcrawlers, cast-off mobile smelters from failed outlander mining attempts.

Jawas live in familial clans, each with distinct territories for living and scavenging. While half the clan is crammed into the warren-like compartments of a sandcrawler, scouring the deserts for usable salvage, the other half resides within a thick-walled fortress. These desert homes were built to protect the Jawas from Sand People or roaming krayt dragons.

A chief leads each clan. Jawa leadership is usually conferred upon males -- females are viewed upon as second-class citizens at best, property at worst. The few females afforded respect in Jawa culture are the shamans. A Jawa becomes a shaman when she is overcome by an illness accompanied by a hallucinatory vision. Depending on the outcome of the vision, and indeed if the Jawa survives the illness, she is usually decreed a shaman, and her words are given the respect that such wisdom dictates.

Once a year, the scattered Jawa clans gather for the great swap meet. Here, numerous sandcrawlers converge and the Jawas meet to exchange salvage. Marriages are arranged and Jawa children and females are exchanged among clans.

Sandcrawlers are huge treaded fortresses used by Jawas as transportation and shelter. The sand-pitted vehicles, many meters in height, are equipped with a magnetic suction tubes for sucking droids and scrap into their cargo chambers.

Jawas hail from Tatooine, a small desert world in the Outer Rim. Jawas scour the desert looking for lost or abandoned droids and other technology. What little they find is loaded into Sandcrawlers, massive steamdriven transport vehicles which serve as moving workshops for the Jawas. Jawas earn their keep by selling the repaired (or at least jury rigged) droids. Jawas rarely leave Tatooine, but some occassionally leave their clans behind in favor of Mos Eisley and other human settlements. Jawas are fiercely loyal to their friends, but Jawas rarely form friendships with humans because of the humans' condesending manner.

Jawa: diminutive desert-dwelling scrap merchants on Tatooine, these repulsive little creatures have large, glowing eyes which peer out from dirty cloaks. They have a randomly variable language, which makes it hard to interpret what they say. They are inherently cowards. Very few have ever seen what a Jawa looks like under their cloaks. They are pack animals, working together in small bands to collect anything and everything for resale to all buyers. It is believed by some xenologists that Jawas have human origins. Their normal body temperature is 116 degrees. The Jawa leader was portrayed by Jack Purvis in Star Wars. (SW, COJ)

Jawa Homeworld: Tatooine
Personality: Excitable, easily frightened or intimidated.
Language: Jawas speak Jawan [
the harsh, guttural language of the Jawa race (E1A5)], as well as the Jawa Trade Language used to communicate with Tatooine's human settlers. Some (very few) Jawas also learn to speak Basic.
Example Names: Het Nkik, Jet Nkik, Datcha, Aguilae (female)

Physical Description: Jawas stand an average of 1 meter tall. Females being slightly shorter. They wear hooded brown cloaks to protect themselves from the heat of Tatooine's binary suns. Shining out from beneath the hood glow a pair of bright yellow eyes. Very few people have seen a Jawa without its hood, but the common consensus is that they are extrordinarily ugly.

Adventurers: Jawas rarely leave their clans. They are typically cowardly, but adventurers often break the mold. Jawa adventurers who have left Tatooine often seek to understand their place in the galaxy. Not content to be scavengers on a desert world, they Try to prove that a Jawa can be much more.  If a group of humans did befriend a Jawa, he would likely be willing to accompany them offworld, provided that they asked him to. Jawas who have severed the ties with their clan might be particularly willing to take on his human friends as a sort of replacement family.

Haggleday
this was annual Jawa festival, when bargains of all kinds were made and great celebrations took place. (SWJ11)

Hubba

a gourd found in the desert oases of Tatooine, it provides the primary basis for the diets of Sand People and Jawas. These round, yellow fruits grew in the shadows of cliffs, and their tough, stringy inner fibers held a great deal of water. The water could be wrung or sucked from them, providing fluids to the eater. The name "hubba" is a Jawa term which meant "the staff of life." (TME, TJP, EGA)

Jawa Beer
a cheap, quickly-brewed concoction created by the Jawas. (MTS)

Jawa Droid Traders
a loose union of Jawa clans that sell droids on Tatooine. (ZHR)

Jawa Ionization Gun
this was the term used to describe the cobbled-together weapons used by the Jawas on Tatooine to immobilize droids and machinery. These guns were a crude form of the DEMP gun used by the Imperial forces. (EGWthis gun is one of the most famous symbols of the Jawa race. The ionization gun has many uses, primary of which is the immobilization of a droid. The weapon discharges an intense ion beam which ionizes the droid’s circuits, rendering it temporarily unable to function. The gun is created from any blaster rifle, which is gutted of its laser components and modified to accept an ion accelerator created by the Jawas themselves. This accelerator is made from a droid restraining bolt wired to an ignition accu-accelerator. (CFG)

Jawa Traders
this scrap and salvage business is located in Mos Eisley, on Tatooine. It was started by the Jawa Aguilae, but she quickly found that she couldn't part with her merchandise. So, she hired Mace Windu to act as her salesman. (GG7)

Jawaswag
this was the nickname given by Gavin Darklighter to his R2 unit. The meant that Gavin believed any Jawa would love to steal the droid. However, when the droid was actually accosted by a group of Jawas, it thwarted their attempts to steal it and actually injured one of them. From that point on, Gavin called it Toughcatch. This name was shortened to Catch for ease of use in combat. About twenty years after the Battle of Endor, Catch was given the R2-Delta upgrade. (BW, DTO)

Squig
this Jawa was considered a mechanical genius, and worked for Abdi-Badawzi as a technician and repairman. Squig maintained the Twi'lek's fleet of ships, and also worked part-time as a consultant for the Caelli-Mercerd Syndicate. Squig considered it his life's work to ensure that Elias Halbert's starship, the Seldom Different, was always in working order. To that end, Squig was always tinkering with the ship. Squig was also known as a hopeless romantic and a chronic gambler. (BSS)

Het Nkik
a Jawa youth who, during the last years of the Empire, felt that Jawas should note be pacifists. He felt that any Jawa could stand up to any threat, given the right tools. He learned this after he was caught by a group of Sand People. He was able to drive them away by setting off an loud alarm on a crashed T-16 skyhopper he'd found. This attitude didn't sit well with Wimateeka, his clan leader, who clung to the belief that Jawas needed to remain as the galaxy's whipping dogs. Het and his best friend and clansman, Jek Nkik, once rebuilt a damaged E522 assassin droid, creating a messenger droid and selling it to Valarian. When Hrar Kkak sold him a DL-44 blaster at a Jawa swap meet, Het knew that he could use it to destroy some of the Imperial stormtroopers who were harassing the Jawas and Sand People. He was in the Mos Eisley cantina, planning his attack, when Luke Skywalker and Ben Kenobi were trying to book passage to Alderaan. While there, Het bargained with a Ranat named Reegesk for the possession of a bantha-horn talisman. The talisman was a sign of Het's success. He ran out into the street, not knowing that Reegesk had pocketed the blaster's power cell. Het attacked Davin Felth's squadron, but the gun proved useless. Het Nkik was executed by stormtrooper 1047. (TME, CCG2)

Jek Nkik

one of Het Nkik's Jawa clansmen, and Het's best friend, this Jawa's full given name was Njeko Nkik. They once recovered an E522 assassin droid from a crashed starship in the desert, rebuilt it, and created a passable messenger droid that they sold to Valarian. Wimateeka wasn't very pleased with their act, but was proud of their ability to get the droid running again. Jek was a member of the Jawa clan who sold R2-D2 and C-3PO to Owen Lars and Luke Skywalker, and perished in the Imperial assault on his clan's sandcrawler. (TME, SWJ11)

Wimateeka
a Jawa, and the leader of Het Nkik's clan. He became good friends with Ariq Joanson, and regularly met with the human. Wimateaka's fortress, located in Bildor's Canyon, bordered on Ariq's farmlands. When Ariq invited the Jawas to Eyvind and Ariela's wedding, Wimateeka readily accepted, hoping to help solidify peaceful relations with his human neighbors. (TME)

Aguilae
the female Jawa that managed the Jawa Traders scavenger lot in Mos Eisley. The name Aquilae was given to her by human customers who couldn't pronounce her given name, Khea Nkuul of the Weekkata tribe. She found that running a business in which she sold mechanical things was harder than she thought, given that she was a Jawa. So, she hired Mace Windu to be her salesman. Shortly after R2-D2 and C-3PO landed on Tatooine, after blasting away from the Tantive IV, Aquilae and Mace were forced to go to work for Jek Nkik and his tribe while trying to swing a deal with them to recover CZ-3. They barely escaped the destruction of Jek's sandcrawler by Imperial forces searching for the droids. When she finally caught up with CZ-3, it had been blasted to pieces by Zutton. She took the droid's motivator and several other parts. (GG7, EGC, SWJ11)

Eet Ptaa
a Jawa clan leader whose fortress was once attacked by Sand People and destroyed. (TME)

Herat
this female Jawa was the shaman of Wittin's tribe. She was Wittin's advisor during his negotiations with Jabba the Hutt, and agreed to serve as one of Jabba's retainers as long as he helped Wittin. (CCG7)

Iasa

this Jawa was known for his skills at acquiring and repairing droids for later resale. Iasa was a trusted confederate of Kalit, until the Jawa leader entrusted Iasa with his credits, his mate, and a sandcrawler. Iasa never explained what happened, but when he returned to the tribe he had none of these items. He was exiled from the clan, and spent his remaining time abusing the residents of Mos Eisley. He thought about stealing Luke Skywalker's landspeeder, while the youth was in the cantina with Ben Kenobi, looking for passage to Alderaan. (CCG9, JKG)

R'kik D'nec

this Jawa, often found roaming the palace of Jabba the Hutt, was undefeated at the Dune Sea version of sabacc. At least, there were no witnesses to any defeats. Popular legend had it that R'kik single-handedly defeated a tribe of Sand People in the desert near Tatooine's Dune Sea, and a bantha tusk he owns seems to prove the story. He is known to his tribe as the Hero of the Dune Sea. (CCG7)

Rkok
a clan of Tatooine Jawas that tried to sell questionable merchandise to Jabba the Hutt. Jabba destroyed their sandcrawler and fed the entire clan to the Sarlacc. (ISU)

Great Jawenko
this was one of the primary gods worshipped by the Jawas. (SWJ11)

Chikkel Atik binmett nikk jchimmen kha
this Jawa saying loosely translated into Basic as, "Follow the Bantha to water, but watch where you step." (SWJ12)

Datinni greb zroom
this Jawa warning is inscribed on the stocks of many of their weapons. Its exact meaning is not known. (CCG)

Dinkle obwegadada
this was a Jawa curse. (SWJ11)Species

Tah doo Een e
the Jawa name for the planet Tatooine. (GG7)
